Reddit – the self-proclaimed ‘front page’ of the internet. The platform has been around for years now and predates most other social networking websites. Reddit skyrocketed since its inception, attracting millions of users from every single corner of the world. Apart from being a space with great content, Reddit also has the largely untapped potential for the promotion of businesses. With the reach the platform has, clubbed with its devoted, loyal users, advertising your products or services on Reddit could be one of the best decisions you make.

Marketing isn’t the least demanding profession out there. It involves tons of research – finding the right audience, figuring out what appeals to them – but imagine having your audience already segmented for you? This is exactly how Reddit works. For those unfamiliar with the platform, Reddit is a host to thousands of interest-based communities known as subreddits. Individuals are free to join these subs if it appeals to them. There’s a sub for pretty much everything you could think of – world politics, puppies, sports, music, science, and philosophy. It even includes things you probably never would have thought of – including ones dedicated to pictures of cats standing up, things cut in half, or unsettling, surreal Garfield comics. The point is, no matter how mainstream or niche what you do is, there’s a sub for it. This makes targeting your audience a whole lot easier.
Stats have shown that posts with external links are more popular than posts just with just text. They receive more upvotes or karma. If your promotional post is tasteful in its approach, your business’s website would potentially receive a lot of traffic. And more than half the content in the most popular subs are links to external platforms. Reddit is especially great if your primary target audience is young adults, as over 40% of internet users between 18 to 24 actively use the website.
There are a few ways you can promote your business on Reddit. Let’s take a look at each of them:
Display ads may not be the best way to advertise your business. But that can be said about any online platform. Display ads on Reddit; however, do get a lot of visibility and are fairly inexpensive compared to other media sharing platforms out there.
This is probably a better way to go about doing this. You can promote your business on subs that are relevant to what you do. Are you an up-and-coming author? You would love r/books. Run a website that sells band merch? r/music or r/listentothis, and even hundreds of subs dedicated to particular artists and bands would be perfect for you. Everything has already been nicely divided and laid out in front of you, and now it’s only a matter of finding the right community.
Reddit’s r/IAMA or ‘Ask Me Anything’ sub is a great way to get your content out there. Here, the original poster gives users the opportunity to, you guessed it – ask them anything about a particular topic. It is an incredibly popular sub and has seen the likes of some very famous people – Bill Gates, Rick Astley, Barack Obama, and Elon Musk, to name a few. This would be a great way to promote your content.
But there’s a catch. Reddit’s community is different from that of Facebook or Tumblr. They’re quick to call out and not engage with lazy attempts of promotion. But if done right, your business could be seeing a good amount of growth
